Column Shift, Floor Shift or Tilt: Picking a Steering Column for Your C10

Tilt steering column with column shifter for a classic C10

The steering column is the one part of the truck you have your hands on every second you are driving. Pick it like you mean it.

Why it matters

Most column decisions come up in the middle of a swap or a restoration: the old column is worn out, the key is long gone, or the shifter no longer matches the transmission. Order the wrong one and you find out when the shifter lands in the wrong place or the shaft does not line up. That is a lost weekend you can skip.

What you need to know

We stock three setups. The Tilt Steering Column runs 30 to 33 inches with a built-in column shifter and backlit gear indicator, 5-position tilt, and a slim 2 inch outer diameter for more legroom. It is pre-wired for turn signals and 4-way hazards, keyless, with a 1 inch Double-D output shaft. The 30 inch column shift automatic (PRND21 style) keeps the shift lever on the column. The 30 inch floor shift column has no lever on the column, built for trucks running a floor shifter. Both 30 inch columns are black, keyless and include an adapter.

Here is what catches people: the 30 inch columns do not include the steering wheel, horn button, steering shaft, U-joints, rag joint, shift linkage or cable, or the column drop and floor mount brackets unless supplied. Budget for those now. Match your column output to your steering box or rack input, then choose the U-joint with the column side as Side A and the box side as Side B. Not sure about Double-D? Read our breakdown below. Verify fitment before you buy.
